Biographical/Historical Notes:
Newport, Maine, is located west of Bangor in Penobscot County and has a population of 3,000. The Maine Central Railroad passed through the town. Margaret Cram, an independent filmmaker connected with the Boston Amateur Theare Guild, arranged "Movie Queen" events in a still unknown number of towns in the mid-1930s. In each town traveling players helped to put on a stage show, and a film was made with local people. A script of Movie Queen by Lauren K. Woods and associated production documents from the Amateur Theatre Guild may be found in the Marion Angeline Howlett Papers, Harvard Theatre Collection, Harvard University.
