Aradia Susan Wiseheart Collection

A 1/2″ open reel collection of concerts & playlets sponsored by Aradia, a womyn’s community that formed in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the 1970s and incorporated as an educational nonprofit in May 1977.  The collection includes two Alix Dobkin concerts and two Aradian plays.  The earliest Dobkin concert in the collection took place December 28, 1979, and is inventoried as ASW-002, ASW-005, ASW-008, and ASW-013 .  The second Dobkin concert in the collection took place May 1, 1982 , and was signed by Susan Burns. It is inventoried as items ASW-001, ASW- 009, ASW-011, and ASW-012.   “The Wizard of Odd” and   “Patti Pot” were presented as annual Halloween plays on October 27, 1979, October 30, 1980, respectively  Reel 4 & 7 are blank. Reels 10 & 14 are partial reels.  Filmmaker Jere Van Syoc was also an Aradian.  Her films were preserved by filmmaker Michelle Citron and are archived as a separate Lesbian Home Movie Project collection.

Summary:
This 1/2" open reel collection was saved by Aradian Susan Wiseheart. The collection includes two Alix Dobkin concerts and two Aradian plays that took place in Grand Rapids under the auspices of "Aradia," a loose community of women who identified as lesbian. It included women who were already a force in Grand Rapids and women who, according to donor Susan Wiseheart & active participant didn't want to leave Michigan after the festival. The earliest Dobkin concert in the collection took place December 28, 1979, and is inventoried as ASW-002, ASW-005, ASW-008, and ASW-013 .
